What is Pilates?

Pilates is a corrective exercise training method devised by Joseph Pilates.

Originally called Contrology, Joseph Pilates saw his method as a Mind and Body exercise system to improve

  • Posture
  •  Balance
  •  Co-Ordination
  •  Strength
  •  Flexibility
  •  Endurance
  • Breathing Control

The original system consists of 34 matwork exercises and also equipment exercises on specialist machinery, which was invented and used by Joseph Pilates.

Over the years Pilates has been modified by some of the older generation instructors and more recently by Physiotherapists with their research based approach to the method.

Michael King director and founder of the Pilates Institute UK adapted the original work and devised a system used by Physiotherapists today known as the Pilates Institute Modified Method.
